Does Wyze work without a subscription?

Yes — and Wyze is unusually generous about the part most companies meter. Live view runs with no plan, in the app, for as long as you like: Wyze's own words are "no session time restrictions or trickery". Notifications still arrive. Nothing is locked behind a trial.

Then something moves in front of the camera, and you find out what the plan is actually for. Without one you get a photograph. Wyze's support site puts it in a one-line note buried in the Cam v4 event-recording article: "Without a paid subscription, your Wyze Cam will only generate a thumbnail image instead of an Event video."

What happens when a Wyze camera sees something and you have no plan?

You are told, and you are shown a still frame. A second Wyze article, updated in June 2026, says it about the Events tab directly: non-subscribers "will see thumbnails on the Events tab rather than Event videos".

Whether that is enough depends on what you pointed the camera at. A still photograph of a parcel on the step, timestamped, is genuinely useful. A still of a car pulling away is close to worthless — you cannot see which way it went, whether anyone got out, or what happened either side of it.

The camera is not crippled. It is doing the two jobs a camera does, minus the one people assume comes free.

Wasn't there a free Wyze plan?

There was, and it closed. Cam Plus Lite gave 12-second event clips on a name-your-price basis — including a price of nothing — and Wyze now describes it as legacy: "no longer available to new users and cannot be assigned to new devices".

The second half is what catches people. Wyze states flatly that Cam Plus Lite "is only available on cameras released before April 2022", and every camera on its shop page today is outside that.

So advice to "just use Cam Plus Lite" — still being written, and plenty of it — describes a door that shut four years ago. If you had it before March 2022 it still works, and you are one of the few people for whom Wyze-without-a-subscription means free cloud video.

How do you get real video out of a Wyze camera without paying?

Put a microSD card in it. Local recording works with no plan, in continuous or events-only mode, and playback is in the same app: tap the camera, then SD Card, then drag along the timeline.

Wyze's own case for subscribing is the best evidence that this works. Arguing for cloud storage on the plans page, it says: "While local recording can be accomplished with a MicroSD card, these cards can be removed by anyone." That is a fair objection — a thief who takes the camera takes the footage — but it is about risk, not capability, and it concedes the capability in the same sentence. Wyze also confirms a plan and a card can run on one camera at once.

Do you have to pay to see the live feed on a Wyze doorbell?

No. Live view is free on every Wyze camera including the doorbells, with no session limit — Wyze's own wording is no session time restrictions or trickery. What the two doorbells charge for is recording: neither takes a microSD card, so a plan is the only place their video can go.

Those are two different questions wearing one sentence, and the difference is the whole decision. Watching costs nothing on any Wyze camera. Keeping what you watched costs nothing on most of them, and costs a subscription on the Video Doorbell v1 and the Video Doorbell Pro.

Which Wyze cameras cannot record without a plan?

Wyze Video Doorbell v1 and Wyze Video Doorbell Pro. Neither takes a microSD card, so on those two the plan is not optional — it is the only place video can go.

One more, for anyone buying a solar camera to avoid wiring as well as billing. Wyze says Solar Cam Pan 2K can record continuously to a card only when it is plugged into 5V/2A mains power, and that "you cannot record continuously using the solar panel only". Solar buys you freedom from a socket or continuous recording, not both.

The Video Doorbell v2 is the odd one out, in the reader's favour: it takes a card, and Wyze documents a free 12-second clip whenever the button is pressed, plan or no plan. Motion gets you a still; a visitor ringing gets you video.

What does a Wyze plan cost if you decide you want one?

$2.99 a month for one camera, $9.99 for all of them, $19.99 for the tier with 60-day history. Those are Cam Plus, Cam Unlimited and Cam Unlimited Pro as published on Wyze's plans page.

Paying annually is where Wyze gets complicated, and it has its own pages here: Cam Plus annual rose by half without the plan page showing it, and Cam Unlimited has an annual price Wyze publishes in two different places at two different figures. If you are about to pay for a year, read those first.

Is a Wyze camera worth buying if you never want a plan?

Yes, provided you buy one with a card slot and actually put a card in it. That is most of the range — everything except the two doorbells above — and it turns the subscription into something you can take or leave rather than something the camera stops working without.

What you are choosing: footage that lives in the camera on your wall rather than on a server, no person-versus-branch filtering on notifications, and no browser access. The running cost is one card.

If the filtering is what you actually want, pay the $2.99 — that feature is the plan, and no card replaces it. If storage you own is what you want, a card in a Wyze camera does it, and so do the other makers that record locally by default.
