Which wireless outdoor cameras work without a subscription: battery and solar cameras from Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo, Lorex and Wyze. None from Ring or SimpliSafe. Everything below was read from each maker's own page on 24 September 2026.
Five brands sell battery and solar cameras that record without a subscription: Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo, Lorex and Wyze. Match one to where it goes:
- Solar panel on the camera itself: Tapo C465 (solar panel built in) (paid link) is 4K on a magnetic base, records to a card of up to 512 GB you buy separately, and Tapo quotes up to 180 days without sun.
- 180° without moving, panel optional: Reolink Argus 4 Pro (paid link) covers 180° in 4K and records to a card of up to 512 GB, or to Reolink's Home Hub.
- Several cameras, recordings kept indoors: eufy SoloCam S340 with HomeBase S380 (paid link) — each camera has a removable solar panel and 8 GB; the HomeBase adds 16 GB, expandable to 16 TB.
- Already own a Wyze? The Battery Cam Pro records to a card with no plan.
- Renting? Whether you may fit one is a lease question.
Matched to where the camera goes, not ranked. Nothing here was tested; every fact is from the maker’s own page, read 24 September 2026.
Which wireless outdoor cameras record without a subscription?
Battery and solar cameras from Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo, Lorex and Wyze record to a card or a hub you own, with no plan. Blink and Google Nest do it only with a condition, and Ring, Arlo and SimpliSafe keep no recording without one. A battery camera is the case where this matters most, because it usually goes where there is no socket — and so no easy way to add a hub or a recorder later.
| Brand | With no plan | Where it is kept | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reolink | Records | microSD to 512 GB in the camera, or a Home Hub | 24 Sep 2026 |
| eufy | Records | 8 GB built in, a microSD card, or a HomeBase — by model | 24 Sep 2026 |
| TP-Link Tapo | Records | microSD to 512 GB in the camera | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Lorex | Records | microSD to 256 GB, bought separately | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Wyze | Records | microSD to 256 GB in the Battery Cam Pro | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Blink | Only with the right module | USB drive on Sync Module 2 or card on XR; Core saves nothing | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Google Nest | Hours, not days | Google's cloud: 3 hours of previews on the Nest Cam (battery) | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Arlo | No recording | The Go 2's card is "not a substitute for cloud recording" | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Ring | Nothing | "A subscription is required to review recorded video" | 24 Sep 2026 |
| SimpliSafe | Nothing | Recording "with select monitoring plans" | 24 Sep 2026 |
Each row read from that maker's own product or support page on the date shown. Nothing here was tested.
Wyze is the brand that changes between product types. Its battery doorbells record locally only when they are wired; its Battery Cam Pro records to a card on battery alone. The brand-by-brand answers for all cameras are on the roundup.
Which ones have the solar panel built in?
Four have the panel as part of the camera: Reolink's Argus Solar, eufy's SoloCam S220 and eufyCam S3 Pro, and Tapo's C465. Others come with a removable panel or in a kit with one, and the rest take a panel sold separately. The wording matters: a panel that is part of the camera has one thing to mount and nothing to lose, while a separate panel can be put in the sun while the camera sits in the shade.
| Camera | Solar | Where the video goes |
|---|---|---|
| Reolink Argus Solar | Part of the camera | microSD to 512 GB |
| Reolink Argus 4 Pro | Panel sold separately | microSD to 512 GB, or Home Hub |
| Reolink Argus Eco Ultra | Panel sold separately | microSD to 512 GB |
| Reolink Argus PT Ultra | Detachable panel | microSD to 512 GB |
| Reolink Altas | Panel sold separately | microSD to 512 GB |
| eufy SoloCam S220 | Part of the camera | 8 GB built in |
| eufy SoloCam S340 | Removable panel | 8 GB built in; HomeBase optional |
| eufy SoloCam E30 | Removable panel | microSD to 128 GB |
| eufyCam S3 Pro kit | Part of the camera | HomeBase S380: 16 GB, to 16 TB |
| Tapo C465 | Part of the camera | microSD to 512 GB |
| Tapo C425 KIT | Panel in the kit | microSD to 512 GB |
| Tapo C402 KIT | Panel in the kit | microSD to 512 GB |
| Lorex 4K Spotlight Battery | Panel sold separately | microSD to 256 GB |
| Lorex Connect 2K Battery | Panel sold separately | microSD |
| Wyze Battery Cam Pro | Panel sold separately | microSD to 256 GB |
From each maker's own product pages, read 24 September 2026, in the maker's own words for the panel: "built-in" or "integrated" is counted as part of the camera, "removable" or "detachable" as such. Tapo's C400, C401, C403 and C460 carry the same microSD slot and are left out only for length.
Reolink's Argus PT Ultra spells out both ways of fitting its detachable panel — on the same wall bracket as the camera, or apart from it, wherever the light is better.
Which need no card at all?
eufy's SoloCam S340 and S220 keep clips on 8 GB inside the camera, and eufyCam kits record to a HomeBase in the house. Everything else here takes a microSD card you buy separately, once. Lorex is worth a note here: it ships its doorbells with a 32 GB card already inside, and sells its battery cameras without one.
For the cameras that take a card, the maker states the largest it will read — 512 GB for Reolink and Tapo, 256 GB for Lorex and Wyze, 128 GB for eufy's E30. SanDisk sells the SanDisk High Endurance microSDXC (with adapter)(paid link)as built for continuous recording in dashcams and security cameras.
How long does the battery last?
Each maker states its own figure under its own test, so they cannot be ranked against each other. Reolink quotes up to 540 days for the Altas at 300 seconds of recording a day, Tapo up to 180 days without sun for the C465, and eufy about three months for the SoloCam E30. What they share is the assumption: a few minutes of recording a day. A camera facing a busy street records far more than that, and every one of these figures would be shorter.
That is where solar earns its place. eufy states that two hours of sun a day keeps the SoloCam E30 charged, and Tapo that the C465's battery lasts up to 180 days with no sun at all. Neither promises the same in winter or under trees.
Do they record all day, or only when something moves?
Mostly not: to save the battery, these cameras record when something moves. Wyze says the Battery Cam Pro can record continuously to its card and warns this may "greatly shorten battery life". Reolink says the same from the other side: its battery cameras record when motion is detected "instead of running continuously".
For a garden or a driveway, that is usually what is wanted — a clip of the moment something happened, not hours of an empty lawn. A camera that has to catch everything belongs on mains power.
Does Ring, Arlo or SimpliSafe make a battery camera that records without a plan?
No. Ring says a subscription is required to review recorded video on its cameras, and SimpliSafe lists recording and 30-day storage "with select monitoring plans". Arlo states that the card in its Go 2 "cannot be used on its own as a substitute for cloud recording". Ring and Arlo still let you watch live and send an alert without a plan; none of the three keeps the recording for later.
The two with a condition, and the three that keep no recording
- Blink: clips are saved locally only to a USB drive on Sync Module 2 or a card on Sync Module XR. Blink's list of cameras that can do that names the Outdoor 4, not the newer Outdoor 2K+. Sync Module Core saves nothing.
- Google Nest: three hours of event video previews with no plan on the Nest Cam (battery), then they are gone.
- Arlo: live view and motion alerts without a plan. The Go 2 has a microSD slot, and Arlo states the card stores recordings "when your Arlo Go 2 Camera is not connected to the cloud" and "cannot be used on its own as a substitute for cloud recording".
- Ring: "A subscription is required to review recorded video on your cameras and doorbells."
- SimpliSafe: the Outdoor Camera (Series 2) lists "Recording and 30-day storage (with select monitoring plans)".
Each read from the maker's own page on 24 September 2026.
The Arlo sentence is the one to read twice. A card slot on the box looks like the way out of a subscription, and Arlo says in its own words that it is not: the card is a fallback for when the camera cannot reach the cloud. The full Arlo answer is here, and the Ring one here.
What do Blink and Nest battery cameras keep?
Less than the five above. Blink keeps clips only with a Sync Module 2 and a USB drive, or a Sync Module XR and a card, and Google keeps three hours of video previews on the Nest Cam (battery). Blink's answer depends on a box that is not the camera, which is explained on the Blink page; Nest's three hours are explained on the Nest page.
What does a camera with no plan still miss?
An off-site copy. A card goes with the camera if someone takes it, which is the case for the makers' own in-house options — eufy's HomeBase and Reolink's Home Hub keep recordings inside, away from the camera. That is the honest case for a cloud plan, and the one thing a card in the camera cannot answer.
What a card in the camera does not do, in the makers' own small print
- It is not off-site. A card leaves with the camera. eufy's HomeBase and Reolink's Home Hub are the makers' own answer: storage that stays inside the house.
- It fills up. Lorex estimates 3 months on a 32 GB card and 24 months on 256 GB for its 4K Spotlight battery camera, at 50 ten-second events a day.
- Recording costs battery. Wyze says local recording "impacts battery life", and Reolink designs its battery cameras to record on motion "instead of running continuously".
