Why not reviews?
Most sites in this space make their money ranking products. There is nothing wrong with that when it is done honestly, but it is not what happens here, for a straightforward reason: I do not have a testing lab, and I am not going to write as though I did.
You can usually tell when someone has. The photos are the manufacturer's. The pros and cons are the spec sheet rearranged. The verdict is whichever product pays the highest commission. I would rather do something I can actually stand behind.
What I can do is read carefully. Privacy policies. Terms of service. Subscription pricing across five years instead of the first month. Breach disclosures. Firmware support timelines. Data-retention clauses. These are documents every manufacturer publishes and almost nobody reads — and it turns out that is where most of the genuinely useful information has been sitting the whole time.
What you will find here
- Reference tables — which cameras work without a subscription, which store footage locally, what each brand keeps and for how long. Maintained, not published once and abandoned.
- Privacy audits — what a device's policy actually permits, in plain language, with the relevant clause quoted so you can check me.
- Guides for renters — the constraints nobody else writes for. No drilling, no rewiring, no landlord permission, and it all has to come with you when you move.
- Real costs — what a system costs over five years once monitoring, storage and the features they moved behind a paywall are counted.
Who writes this
I am Yassine EL ABBASS, a software developer. I came to this the way most people do: I wanted a camera for my own place, started reading what the manufacturer said it would do with the footage, and found the answer considerably less reassuring than the box.
Reading systems carefully is what I do for a living. It turns out to transfer.
How this site makes money
Display advertising, and some affiliate links. Affiliate links never influence what gets covered or what a reference table says — which is easier to promise here than most places, because I am not ranking products in the first place.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, I want to know. Policies change, brands get acquired, prices move, and a reference table that has quietly gone stale is worse than no table at all. Corrections are made openly and the page notes what changed and when.
