Does Arlo work without a subscription?

Yes — live view and motion alerts. Arlo's plans page says only “certain features”; its product pages say which, and recording is not one of them.

Yes — and less than any other brand on this site. An Arlo camera without a plan gives you a live view and a notification that something moved. It does not give you the recording.

Arlo says so itself, though you have to open the right page to find it.

Arlo without a plan keeps the live view and loses the clip — the recording is the paid part, and Arlo documents no card or hub to keep it on. If you want the footage to exist without a subscription, start with a camera that writes it to storage you own.

Does Arlo work without a subscription?

Yes, but less than any other brand on this site. Arlo states that live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription. The recording itself does not: Video Cloud Storage is a paid feature, and 60-Day Video History sits inside every Arlo Secure tier including the cheapest.

Every row is from https://us.arlo.com/products/arlo-pro-3-floodlight-camera, read 17 September 2026 — the product page rather than the plans page, because the plans page says only “certain features” and does not name them.

The last row is the one that separates Arlo from the rest of this cluster. eufy, Lorex and Tapo all answer "where does it record without a plan" with a card or a hub you own. On the pages read for this page, Arlo does not answer it at all.

What does Arlo say you lose without a plan?

Arlo names three things on its product FAQ — Video Cloud Storage, Interactive Notifications and Video Object Detection — and then says "and more", pointing to arlo.com/arlosecure for the full list. So you keep the live feed and a notification that motion happened, and lose the clip and the filtering that tells you what moved.

That second loss is worth sitting with. A notification without object detection is a notification that something triggered the camera, and every brand here sends you that much for free. What the plan buys is the sentence inside the alert.

The same question, on two Arlo pages

  • The plans page — "Is an Arlo Secure Early Warning System plan required to use my Arlo products?" → "No. You can still use your Arlo product with certain features, but a plan helps you get the most out of your devices."
  • The product page — "Is a subscription required for my Floodlight camera to work after the 1-month trial ends?" → "No… Without a subscription, you will continue to receive notifications when motion is detected and be able to view your camera's live video feed. However, a subscription is required to maintain premium features like Video Cloud Storage, Interactive Notifications, Video Object Detection, and more."

Both read 17 September 2026. The second answer is the one a buyer needs, and it is on the page you reach after choosing a camera rather than the one you read while choosing.

Why does Arlo's plans page not answer this?

It does answer it, in seven words that carry no information. The FAQ on Arlo's plans page asks whether a plan is required and replies "No. You can still use your Arlo product with certain features" — and never says which features.

This is the same shape as the thing this site keeps finding. Ring publishes 55,584 words about its plans and not the price. Arlo publishes a plan page that answers the most common question about its plans with "certain features". Neither is a lie. Both leave the buyer to go and look somewhere else.

Where do Arlo recordings go without a subscription?

Nowhere that Arlo documents. Every other brand in this cluster answers this with a microSD card, a hub or a hard drive you own. Arlo's plan page puts video history inside the plan at every tier, and the two spec sheets read for this page disagree about whether there is even a USB port.

The Pro 3 Floodlight lists "USB requirements N/A". The Arlo Security System lists "USB 2.0 compliant devices". Neither page says what that port is for, so this page does not guess — but a buyer who wants footage kept on hardware they own should treat Arlo as not offering it until Arlo says otherwise on a page with a date on it.

What does an Arlo plan cost in 2026?

Smart Aware is $9.99 a month or $95.88 a year for one camera, and $19.99 or $215.88 for unlimited cameras. Smart Secure is $29.99 or $299.98 and Ultra Secure is $49.99 or $479.88. Arlo renamed all four tiers in September 2026 and began printing the yearly totals.

TierCamerasMonthlyYearlySaved by paying yearly
Smart Aware (one camera)One$9.99$95.88$24.00
Smart Aware (unlimited)Unlimited$19.99$215.88$24.00
Smart Secure (unlimited)Unlimited$29.99$299.98$59.90
Ultra Secure (unlimited)Unlimited$49.99$479.88$120.00

Arlo's own figures, both columns. The saving is twelve months at the monthly rate minus the printed yearly price. Arlo advertises “Save up to $120/yr”, which is true of the $49.99 tier and of no other: the $19.99 tier saves $24.00, or 10%.

Two things changed at once, and Arlo says so on the page: "Please note that Arlo Secure plan names have recently changed." Secure Plus is now Smart Aware, Secure Premium is now Smart Secure, and the top tier is Ultra Secure. Our Arlo cost page said Arlo never stated a yearly total, which was true in August and is not now — it was corrected the day this was written.

The rates did not move. $95.88 a year is the same $7.99 a month Arlo was charging under the old name, so nobody's bill changed; only the label on it and the way the number is printed.

Is the Arlo free trial automatic?

Arlo states the trial begins once the first device is onboarded, and that the service may require a paid subscription once it ends. The product FAQ confirms the camera keeps working afterwards — with live view and motion notifications, and without cloud recording.

That is the moment this page is written for. A camera that has been recording for a month stops recording, and Arlo's own answer to "is a subscription required" is still, correctly, "no".

If the recording is the part you wanted

Specifications as published by each maker, read 17 September 2026. Nothing was tested and nothing is ranked. Both of these answer the question this page could not answer for Arlo: they write the footage to storage you own, and the detection runs on the camera rather than inside a plan.

How this was checked

No cameras were tested and no plan was purchased. The free tier answers and the quoted FAQ come from https://us.arlo.com/products/arlo-pro-3-floodlight-camera, read on 17 September 2026. The plan names, prices, yearly totals and the "certain features" answer come from https://us.arlo.com/pages/arlo-secure, read the same day. The saving column is arithmetic on those two published figures and is labelled as ours.

The comparison rows are each maker's own page, with their dates on the tracker, and the brand pages they summarise are linked from the roundup.

If Arlo documents a local storage option, or moves these pages again, this gets the new answer and a new date. This site has already recorded Arlo wrongly twice — once as publishing no prices at all, once as never printing a yearly total — and both times the error was trusting a page that had moved.
