Which indoor cameras work without a subscription: every indoor model read from Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo and Lorex, and the Wyze Cam v4 with a card in it. None from Ring or SimpliSafe. Everything below is from each maker's own page, read 24 September 2026.
Every indoor camera read from Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo and Lorex records to a card with no plan. Match one to the room:
- A lens that turns away when you are home: eufy Indoor Cam E220 (paid link) pans 360°; eufy says its privacy mode rotates the lens away and pauses recording.
- Pan and tilt, 512 GB card: Reolink E1 Pro (paid link) pans 355°, turns away on a tap, and takes a card of up to 512 GB.
- Small and fixed, on a shelf: TP-Link Tapo C120 (2K QHD, indoor/outdoor) (paid link) records to a card of up to 512 GB, with person alerts Tapo gives without a subscription.
- Wyze: Wyze Cam v4 (paid link) records 24/7 to a card of up to 256 GB; Cam Plus is for AI alerts and cloud backup.
- Recording sound? That depends on where you live.
Matched to the room, not ranked. Nothing here was tested; every fact is from the maker’s own page, read 24 September 2026.
Which indoor cameras record without a subscription?
Every indoor camera read from Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo and Lorex records to a microSD card with no plan, and so does the Wyze Cam v4 with a card in it. Ring and SimpliSafe keep no recording without a plan, and Google keeps up to six hours of previews. The four brands that record without a plan indoors are the same four that do at the door and in the garden.
| Brand | With no plan | Where it is kept | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reolink | Records | microSD to 512 GB (E1, E1 Pro, E1 Zoom) | 24 Sep 2026 |
| eufy | Records | microSD (E220, E30, S350); HomeBase optional | 24 Sep 2026 |
| TP-Link Tapo | Records | microSD to 512 GB (C110 to C225) | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Lorex | Records | microSD (IC101, W463AQ) | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Wyze | Records, with a card | microSD to 256 GB (Cam v4) | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Blink | Only with a Sync Module | USB drive on Sync Module 2 or card on XR; the list names the Mini and Mini 2 | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Google Nest | Hours, not days | Up to 6 hours of previews, Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Arlo | Live view and alerts | Cloud storage needs a plan, per Arlo's product FAQs | 24 Sep 2026 |
| Ring | Nothing | "A subscription is required to review recorded video" | 24 Sep 2026 |
| SimpliSafe | Nothing | "Recording and 30-day storage (with select plans)" | 24 Sep 2026 |
Each row from that maker's own product or support page on the date shown. Arlo's indoor camera page carries no subscription FAQ; the row uses the wording of its FAQs for its doorbell, Pro 6 and Go 2. Nothing here was tested.
The brand-by-brand answer for every kind of camera is on the roundup. This page adds the two things that matter more inside a home than outside it: privacy and sound.
Which indoor cameras turn away for privacy?
Two indoor cameras physically stop looking. eufy's E220 "physically rotates the lens to face away from the room and pauses all recording", and Reolink's E1 Pro will "turn away and keep your space private" on a tap. eufy adds, on the page for the eufy Indoor Cam E220(paid link), that the lens makes "a brief mechanical sound" when it moves — a sign that it has.
| Camera | Pan | Privacy, in the maker's words |
|---|---|---|
| eufy Indoor Cam E220 | 360° | Lens "physically rotates … to face away from the room" |
| eufy Indoor Cam S350 | 360° | Privacy Mode |
| Reolink E1 Pro | 355° | "turn away and keep your space private" |
| Reolink E1 Zoom | 355° | Privacy Mode "when surveillance is unwanted" |
| Reolink E1 | 355° | Privacy Mode |
| Tapo C210 | 360° | "Customizable Privacy Mode" |
| Tapo C220 | 360° | "Customizable Privacy Mode" |
| Tapo C225 | 360° | — |
| Tapo C110 | — | "Customizable Privacy Mode" |
| Tapo C120 | — | — |
| Lorex 2K Dual Lens Indoor Pan-Tilt | Pan-tilt | Privacy Mode |
| Lorex Connect 2K Indoor | — | Privacy Mode "anytime using the Lorex Connect app" |
| Wyze Cam v4 | — | — |
From each maker's own product page, read 24 September 2026. A dash means the page read does not state it — not that the camera lacks it. Every camera here records to a microSD card with no plan.
The wording is the point of that table. A privacy mode that moves the lens is something you can see from across the room; one that is a setting in an app is something you take on trust. Tapo and Lorex list a privacy mode without saying which kind theirs is.
Two more that close — on cameras that keep nothing without a plan
- Arlo lists an "Auto Privacy Shield" on its Essential Indoor camera.
- SimpliSafe lists an "Automated privacy shutter" on its indoor camera — and "Recording and 30-day storage (with select plans)".

Do they have two-way audio?
Every indoor camera read here lists two-way audio — Tapo, Reolink, eufy, Lorex, Wyze and SimpliSafe. The question is not whether it can talk but whether it should record sound, and that depends on where you live. As the renter page sets out, several US states require everyone in a conversation to consent to it being recorded, and an indoor camera hears every conversation in the room.
The rules, and the setting that deals with them, are on the page about what your lease says, which covers audio for owners as much as renters. For a camera in a flat, the apartment page covers mounting.
Do they record all day, or only when something moves?
Several say so. Wyze: "Record 24/7 locally with a microSD card up to 256 GB". eufy lists 24/7 recording for the Indoor Cam S350, and Tapo says card recording, "including detection recording and 24/7 recording", keeps running even without internet. The card is the limit: Tapo, for example, says a 512 GB card holds 37 days of 2K footage from its C120.
Continuous recording is the difference between a camera that shows you what happened and one that shows you what triggered it. For a camera on mains power there is no battery reason not to have it — only the card size. The offline part is explained on the page on cameras without Wi-Fi.
Does the Wyze Cam v4 need Cam Plus?
Not to keep video, as long as there is a card in it. Wyze says the Cam v4 records 24/7 locally to a microSD card and sells Cam Plus for "AI alerts and cloud backup". Without a card and without a plan, Wyze's own support page on the Events tab (read 28 August 2026) says the cloud keeps a still image of an event rather than a clip.
So the card is not optional in practice: it is the thing that turns a free Wyze camera into one that keeps video. Wyze's product page states 256 GB as the maximum in its specifications and 512 GB in its FAQ; the smaller figure is the safe one. The full Wyze answer is here.
What do Ring, Nest, Blink, Arlo and SimpliSafe indoor cameras keep?
Ring and SimpliSafe keep no recording without a plan. Google keeps up to six hours of event video previews on the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen). Blink's Mini, without a plan, saves clips only to storage on a Sync Module. Blink's local storage list names the Mini and Mini 2; Arlo's cameras give live view and alerts without a plan, and cloud storage with one.
Each has its own page: Ring, Nest and Blink.
Corrections
If a row here is wrong or has moved since the date beside it, tell us and it is corrected with the new date noted. Makers add and remove privacy features in firmware without announcing it, which is why every row carries the day it was read.
