Which garage cameras work without a subscription: any camera that records to a card in itself. Not myQ's: Chamberlain says its garage cameras stream live without a plan but record nothing without one. The myQ facts are from Chamberlain's own help centre, read 27 September 2026.

myQ's garage cameras record nothing without a plan. These record to a card in the camera. Match one to the garage:

  • A socket and good Wi-Fi: Wyze Cam v4 (paid link) records 24/7 to a card of up to 256 GB.
  • Wi-Fi that drops out there: TP-Link Tapo C120 (2K QHD, indoor/outdoor) (paid link) records to a card of up to 512 GB and, Tapo says, keeps recording when the router goes.
  • A detached garage with no socket: Reolink Argus 4 Pro (paid link) runs on a battery, takes an optional solar panel, and records to a card of up to 512 GB.
  • Already have myQ? Live view is free; recording starts at $49.99 a year.

Matched to the garage, not ranked. Nothing here was tested; every fact is from the maker’s own page, read 27 September 2026 (myQ) and 24 September 2026 (the rest).

Does a myQ garage camera work without a subscription?

For watching, yes; for recording, no. Chamberlain's own comparison says "Livestreaming is available without a subscription", and its help centre says the myQ Smart Garage Camera will only record motion events once Event Recording is on, and "A myQ Video Storage subscription is required to enable this feature."

What a myQ garage camera does with no plan
FeatureNo planWith myQ Video Storage
LivestreamYesYes
Recording motion eventsNoYes
Video historyNo7, 14 or 30 days, by plan
Smart detection, detection zones, preview notificationsNoYes

Chamberlain's help centre, read 27 September 2026: the camera comparison article, the Event Recording article, and the Video Storage FAQ's list of what you lose when a subscription ends. Nothing was tested.

That makes myQ the Ring of the garage. The camera shows you the door whenever you open the app, and forgets everything it saw. None of the Chamberlain pages read mentions a card or local storage for any myQ camera; recording is cloud recording, and cloud recording is the plan.

Alerts are the free part that people miss. Chamberlain's FAQ for its Outdoor Battery Camera says that after the trial you "will still be able to stream live video through the myQ app and receive notifications when motion is detected for free". You are told something moved; you cannot go back and see it.

myQ's own pricing page puts it the same way from the other side. Its headline asks whether you are "looking for more than live streaming and motion alerts". Live streaming is the part that is free.

What does a myQ plan cost?

From $49.99 a year. myQ's pricing page lists Basic at $49.99 a year for one Secure View garage door opener with 7 days of events, Essential at $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year for any one device and 14 days, and Ultra at $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year for unlimited devices and 30 days.

The Basic plan is the one to notice if you are here because of a myQ opener. It is the cheapest way to record, and it covers exactly one device: the opener with the camera built in. Add a Smart Garage Camera next to it and you are on Essential or Ultra. Chamberlain's FAQ also says the Essential plan "is on a per-camera basis": to add a second camera you cancel it and move to Ultra.

When a plan ends, the FAQ says, you keep it to the end of the billing cycle and then lose "video storage, smart detection, detection zones, preview notifications, setting customization". Whether any money comes back is a different question, answered brand by brand on the refund page.

Does a garage door opener with a camera need a subscription?

To record, yes. The same help article names the garage door opener's integrated camera alongside the Smart Garage Camera: neither records motion events without a myQ Video Storage subscription. It is the one device the cheaper Basic plan is for.

Setting one up, Chamberlain says, you "will receive a notification with an offer for a free 30-day video storage trial". That trial is the moment to decide. After it, the camera in the opener behaves like the Smart Garage Camera: live view, and nothing kept.

Does the myQ Video Keypad record without a plan?

Only during the trial. Chamberlain says the Video Keypad comes with "a free 30-day trial of our myQ Video Storage Plan, which includes access to the last 7-days of your motion event recordings", and that recording history continues if you subscribe. Without Wi-Fi, the same FAQ says, it still opens the door with a PIN, but you "will be unable to stream/record video".

Which garage cameras record without a subscription?

Any camera that records to a card in itself, which is most of Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo and Lorex. For a garage: the Wyze Cam v4 records 24/7 to a card of up to 256 GB, the Tapo C120 to a card of up to 512 GB, and the battery Reolink Argus 4 Pro to a card of up to 512 GB where there is no socket. The card is the whole difference: the camera keeps its own recording, so nobody has to rent you somewhere to put it.

Three cameras for a garage that record to a card with no plan
CameraPowerWhere the video goes
Wyze Cam v4PlugmicroSD to 256 GB, 24/7 or on motion
TP-Link Tapo C120PlugmicroSD to 512 GB; keeps recording when the router goes
Reolink Argus 4 ProBattery, optional solar panelmicroSD to 512 GB, or Reolink's Home Hub

Each from its maker's own page, read 24 September 2026, as on this site's indoor, outdoor and no-Wi-Fi pages. Chosen for the garage's three situations, not ranked; the full list is on the roundup.

Why these three, for a garage specifically. The Wyze Cam v4(paid link)is the simplest if there is a socket: Wyze says it records "24/7 locally with a microSD card up to 256 GB", and without a card or a plan it keeps only a still photo of each event, so the card is not optional. The TP-Link Tapo C120 (2K QHD, indoor/outdoor)(paid link)is the one for a garage at the edge of the Wi-Fi, for the reason in the next section. And the Reolink Argus 4 Pro(paid link)is for a garage with no power at all.

Whichever you choose, the card is bought separately. A high-endurance card such as the SanDisk High Endurance microSDXC (with adapter)(paid link)is made for a camera writing to it all day. Tapo, for scale, says a 512 GB card holds 37 days of 2K footage from the C120.

The brand-by-brand answer is on the roundup, with the full pages for Wyze, Tapo and Reolink.

What if the Wi-Fi does not reach the garage?

A camera that records to its card keeps recording. Tapo says card recording, "including detection recording and 24/7 recording, will keep running" when the router goes, though you cannot watch or get alerts until it is back. myQ's video needs the network. Chamberlain's Video Keypad FAQ, for example, says it must be within 50 feet of the router.

A garage is often the far end of the house, or not part of it at all. A camera that records to its card needs the network to be set up and to show you anything, but not to record. For a garage with no signal at all, the options, from a network cable to a camera on a mobile plan, are on the page on cameras without Wi-Fi.

Can you use myQ without paying for video?

Yes. Live view on a myQ camera needs no subscription, in Chamberlain's own words. What you do not get without a plan is recording and history, and a camera that records to its own card covers that without a second bill.

So if the opener is already on the wall, nothing forces the plan. The question is only what you want kept. Live view answers "is the door shut?"; a recording answers "who opened it on Tuesday?". The second one is what costs money on myQ and costs a card on the three cameras above.

For a camera that watches the drive rather than the door, see the outdoor page; for one inside the house, the indoor page.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong or has moved since the date beside it, tell us and it is corrected with the new date noted. The myQ prices especially: they were read from an archived copy of myQ's page because myq.com would not load for this site, and they carry that date.
