Security cameras for a small business without a subscription

A recorder in the back office keeps every camera's video with no monthly fee, Reolink says. What SimpliSafe charges a business, and how many days a drive holds.

Security cameras for a small business without a subscription: a recorder with a hard drive in the building, or a card camera for each room. Reolink sells to business on exactly this, "No monthly fee"; SimpliSafe's business plans are all monthly. Everything below is from each maker's own page, read 27 September 2026.

For a business, the video can live on a drive in the back office instead of on a plan. Match it to the premises:

  • Several cameras, one recorder: Reolink RLK8-800B4 (8-channel PoE NVR, 2 TB drive, four 4K cameras): 8 channels, 2 TB built in, up to 16 TB, with person and vehicle alerts Reolink lists as needing no subscription.
  • One counter or stockroom: TP-Link Tapo C120 (2K QHD, indoor/outdoor) (paid link) records to a card of up to 512 GB.
  • One camera, recording all day: Wyze Cam v4 (paid link) records 24/7 to a card of up to 256 GB.
  • Already on SimpliSafe? What it does with no plan, and its business plans below.

Matched to the premises, not ranked. Nothing here was tested; every fact is from the maker’s own page, read 27 September 2026 (Reolink, SimpliSafe) and 24 September 2026 (Tapo, Wyze).

Which security cameras work for a small business without a subscription?

The ones that record to storage in the building: a camera with a card for one room, or a recorder with a hard drive for several. Reolink sells to business on exactly that: "No monthly fee when you choose Reolink for your business." SimpliSafe's business plans, by contrast, are all monthly.

Reolink and SimpliSafe read 27 September 2026; Tapo and Wyze read 24 September 2026. SimpliSafe's Standard Business ($24.99) lists no camera recording. Nothing is ranked.

A home and a shop want different things from the same camera. A home wants to know who came to the door. A shop wants every angle kept for days, because a problem is often noticed a week later: a stock count that does not add up, a customer who claims a fall. That is a storage question before it is a camera question, and it is why people searching this add the word "system".

What does a recorder (NVR) add?

One box with a hard drive that every camera records to. Reolink's RLN8-410 has 8 camera ports and a 2 TB drive installed, takes up to 16 TB, and records all of them 24/7 at once. The cameras connect by network cable, which also powers them.

Reolink's support article on how many cameras its recorders take lists 4, 8, 16, 36 and 64-channel models, and notes that some 8-port versions of the RLN8-410 show 12 channels, with the extra four for battery Wi-Fi cameras. For a small business the 8-channel recorder is the usual size; the kit sold with it, the Reolink RLK8-800B4 (8-channel PoE NVR, 2 TB drive, four 4K cameras), comes with four 4K cameras and leaves four ports free.

The cable is the part to plan. Power over Ethernet means one network cable per camera, from the recorder to wherever the camera goes, and no socket near the camera. In a single-storey shop that is an afternoon; across a car park, it is the reason to look at battery cameras or cameras that need no Wi-Fi for the far corners.

How many days of video does a recorder keep?

It depends on how many cameras and how big the drive. Reolink's own table, for 24/7 recording at 4096 kbps: four cameras keep 12 days on 2 TB and 48 days on 8 TB; eight cameras, 5 days and 24 days. Recording only on motion lasts longer.

How many days a Reolink recorder keeps, recording 24/7
Cameras2 TB4 TB8 TB12 TB
148 days97 days194 days291 days
412 days24 days48 days73 days
85 days12 days24 days36 days
163 days6 days12 days18 days

Reolink's own support table, read 27 September 2026, at a main-stream bit rate of 4096 kbps. Reolink calls the figures estimates for planning; a higher bit rate keeps fewer days, and motion-only recording keeps more. Not calculated here.

The row to read is the one for the number of cameras you will actually run. Eight cameras recording around the clock fill a 2 TB drive in five days, which is too short to catch a problem noticed at the next weekly stock count. The same eight keep 24 days on 8 TB, and the RLK8-800B4 takes up to 16 TB, Reolink says. Switching the quieter cameras to motion-only recording stretches it further.

Can it tell a person from a passing car without a plan?

On Reolink's kit, yes. The RLK8-800B4 page lists person, vehicle and animal detection with "Accurate Alerts" and "Without Subscription". On the brands that sell plans, that filtering is usually what the plan is for.

For a business with a street outside, that is the difference between an alert you read and an alert you mute. Reolink's own page for the kit puts "Person/Vehicle/Animal Detection", "Accurate Alerts" and "Without Subscription" side by side. The fuller Reolink answer, including the eight recorder-kit cameras that take no card of their own, is on the Reolink page.

What does SimpliSafe charge a business?

SimpliSafe's help centre lists four business plans, all monthly: Standard Business at $24.99, Core Business at $34.99, Pro Business at $69.99 and Pro Plus Business at $99.99. None is the self-monitoring or no-plan option its home plans include.

What SimpliSafe charges a business, next to a home
PlanBusiness, per monthHome, per month
Standard$24.99$22.99
Core$34.99$32.99
Pro$69.99$49.99
Pro Plus$99.99$79.99
Self-monitoring with recordingsNot listed$9.99
No plan ("Unmonitored")Not listedLive view and arming

SimpliSafe's help centre: its business plan options (updated 26 June 2026) and its residential plan options (updated 29 June 2026), both read 27 September 2026. Standard lists no camera recording on either side; the home article says so outright.

Two things stand out. The business price is the home price plus between $2 and $20 a month, for what SimpliSafe describes as elevated support, expanded user roles and up to nine custom PINs. And the two home options that cost little or nothing, self-monitoring with recordings and no plan at all, are not on the business list. A business on SimpliSafe that wants its camera video kept is on $34.99 a month or more.

That is a fair price for what it includes, which is people who answer an alarm. It is a different product from video you keep yourself. What a SimpliSafe system does with no plan at all is on the SimpliSafe page.

Is one camera enough for a small shop?

For a single room, a counter or a stockroom, often yes. A camera that records to its own card does the same job for one view: the Tapo C120 takes a card of up to 512 GB, and the Wyze Cam v4 records 24/7 to a card of up to 256 GB.

A card camera is the simplest start: plug it in, put a card in it, and it keeps its own video. A high-endurance card such as the SanDisk High Endurance microSDXC (with adapter)(paid link)is made for a camera writing all day. The limit is that each camera keeps its own video on its own card, so with three or four of them, a recorder that keeps them all in one place starts to make more sense. For cameras inside, the indoor page has each maker's storage and privacy figures.

Can a business record staff and customers?

That depends on the state, and on sound more than on video. As this site's renter page sets out, several US states require everyone in a conversation to consent to it being recorded. Nothing here is legal advice; check your state before recording audio.

Video in the public parts of a shop is the common case; sound, and cameras in places where people expect privacy, are where the rules bite. The audio rules and the settings that deal with them are on the renter page, which covers audio for everyone, not only renters.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong or has moved since the date beside it, tell us and it is corrected with the new date noted. Plan prices and recorder capacities change with little notice, which is why every table carries the day it was read.
