Does SimpliSafe work without a subscription?

As an alarm you watch yourself, yes: live view and arming from the app stay. Recording, dispatch and the network backup stop, in SimpliSafe's own words.

Yes, as an alarm you watch yourself, and no, as a camera that keeps anything. SimpliSafe's own help centre says that without a plan you keep the live video feed and remote arming in the app, and lose camera recording, 24/7 emergency dispatch and the built-in network backup.

Everything here is from SimpliSafe's own pages, read 27 September 2026. The answer sits on its help centre under a heading called "Unmonitored", folded shut until you open it.

SimpliSafe works without a plan as an alarm you watch yourself, but its cameras keep nothing: live view and arming stay, recording does not. If the video is what you wanted, this one keeps it on a card.

What does SimpliSafe do with no plan?

SimpliSafe says it plainly: "You still can access basic features without a plan - though you will need an internet connection to access these features." It lists two, the live video feed of your cameras and remote arming and disarming from the app, and then five things you do not have.

SimpliSafe's help centre, "What are the Residential Monitoring Plan Options?" (updated 29 June 2026), its "Unmonitored" section, and its article on text and email alerts, all read 27 September 2026. SimpliSafe adds that even the free features need an internet connection. Nothing was tested.

That is a real alarm system you watch yourself. It arms, it disarms, and you can look at your cameras from your phone. What it will not do is call anyone, keep anything, or carry on over its backup network when the power goes.

Do SimpliSafe cameras record without a subscription?

No. Without a plan, SimpliSafe lists "Unlimited camera recording and evidence capture" among the things you do not have, and its doorbell page says "Monitoring plan with camera recordings is required." You can watch live; nothing is kept.

SimpliSafe's article on how its cameras record lists nine triggers, from an alarm (three minutes of video) to motion (ten seconds, longer if it keeps moving), and then an asterisk: "Recording availability and storage in the SimpliSafe® Mobile App depends on your monitoring subscription". None of the SimpliSafe pages read offers a microSD card or any local storage as the alternative. The recording lives on the plan.

That puts SimpliSafe beside Ring: live video free, recording paid. It is the opposite of the brands that write to a card in the camera, which are on the roundup, and for a doorbell specifically, on the doorbell page.

Does the SimpliSafe app work without a plan?

For the two things that matter, yes. SimpliSafe's help centre says that with no plan you still have the live video feed of your cameras and can remotely arm and disarm the system from the app. Text alerts are different: every kind needs a plan. SimpliSafe's alerts article lists the plans that include text alerts for alarms, for system health and for system status, and none of the three lists includes going without one.

One contradiction to know about. SimpliSafe's monitoring page lists "Control your system in the app: Arm, disarm, confirm or cancel alarms" as a plan feature. The help centre's section on going without a plan says remote arming and disarming stay. The help centre is the specific answer to the specific question, so this page follows it, and names both.

What is the cheapest SimpliSafe plan?

Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings, at $9.99 a month on SimpliSafe's help centre and 33¢ a day on its monitoring page. It keeps recordings for 30 days from up to 10 cameras, and SimpliSafe notes that it "does not include professional monitoring".

SimpliSafe's five plans, by the day and by the month
PlanPer dayPer monthRecords camera video?
Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings33¢$9.99Yes, 30 days, up to 10 cameras; no professional monitoring
Standard76¢$22.99No: "does not include camera recordings"
Core$1.10$32.99Yes, unlimited recording
Pro$1.66$49.99Yes, plus overnight Active Guard
Pro Plus$2.66$79.99Yes, plus 24/7 Active Guard

Per-day prices from SimpliSafe's monitoring page; per-month prices from its help centre. Both read 27 September 2026. The two are SimpliSafe's own figures; neither column was calculated here.

Read the Standard row carefully. It is the plan that sends the police, and SimpliSafe's help centre says it "does not include camera recordings". So the cheapest plan that calls for help keeps no video, and the cheapest plan that keeps video calls nobody. Both together start at Core.

Why does SimpliSafe quote its prices per day?

Because $1.10 reads smaller than $32.99. SimpliSafe's monitoring page quotes every plan by the day; its own help centre quotes the same plans by the month, and Core is $32.99 a month there. It is the same plan at the same price, written two ways by the same company.

A daily price is hard to compare with a monthly or yearly one without doing the multiplication, which is the point this site's subscription tracker makes about SimpliSafe's $1.10: on a page of monthly plans it looks like the cheapest number and is not. The help centre's monthly figures settle it without arithmetic.

What stops working if you cancel SimpliSafe?

The plan's features: 24/7 emergency dispatch, the built-in network backup for a power cut, camera recording, homeowner's insurance discounts and the lifetime warranty. SimpliSafe replaces faulty equipment for life only "As long as you have an active monitoring subscription".

The warranty is the one people miss. SimpliSafe's monitoring page describes lifetime equipment replacement, with shipping covered, "As long as you have an active monitoring subscription". Cancel and the system is still yours; the promise to replace it is not.

SimpliSafe bills monthly with "No contracts. No cancellation fees", in its words. Whether any unused part of a month comes back is a different question, which the refund page answers maker by maker.

Should you buy SimpliSafe to avoid a subscription?

Only if the alarm is what you want. With no plan, a SimpliSafe system arms, disarms and shows you live video, and that is all its help centre promises. If what you want is video kept without a monthly bill, a camera that records to its own card does that, and no SimpliSafe camera is sold that way.

If the aim is an indoor camera that keeps its video, the options, with each maker's own storage figures, are on the indoor page.
