Pet cameras without a subscription: which ones save video, and what the plans cost
At work and wondering what the dog is up to? Every pet camera shows you live for free. Only some keep video without a plan — here is which.

It's 2 p.m. You're at your desk, and you're wondering whether the dog has been barking since you left — or whether the cat has finally made it onto the kitchen counter.
Pet cameras without a subscription all let you check on your pet right now, for free: live video works on every one here, and none charges for talking to your pet. What a monthly plan buys is the part you probably wanted — seeing what happened while you weren't looking. Tapo, eufy and Wyze keep that video on a memory card for free. Furbo, Petcube and Ring don't keep it without a plan.
Below: which camera fits your situation, what the plans really cost over two years, and the exact words each company uses. Everything was checked on each company's own website on 13 October 2026.
The Tapo C220 names pet, bark and meow detection on Tapo's own page and records to a microSD card, so no plan is needed to keep video.

It depends on what you want to know while you're out. Four situations come up again and again in what pet owners search for, and each one points to a different camera.
Your dog is alone all day, and you worry about barking

You want two things: a ping when the barking starts, and video you can look at later to see what set it off. The Tapo C220 does both without a plan. Tapo's page lists bark detection (marked as a test feature, "Beta") and recording to a memory card (microSD) of up to 512 GB. Furbo also tells you about barking for free — but without its plan it keeps no video, so you'll know it happened and not why.
Your cat is busy at night and climbs everything

You want a camera that sees in the dark and turns to follow. The eufy Indoor Cam E220 turns all the way round, records to a card, and eufy says it recognises pets on the camera. eufy's own advice on where to put it fits a cat well: "Corners or high shelves often provide the best view." One catch, below: eufy's page disagrees with itself about whether the E220 follows pets or only people.
You just want to say hi at lunch

Then any of them will do, and you don't need a plan. Live video is free on all six, and none of them lists talking to your pet as a paid extra — a Furbo or a Petcube with no subscription at all does this. It's the simplest use, and it costs nothing after the camera.
You want to see what happened while you were out

This is where it splits. Only the cameras with a card keep video for free: Tapo, eufy and Wyze. Wyze records to its card too, but its pet and barking alerts are part of Cam Plus, $2.99 a month per camera. Furbo, Petcube and Ring keep that history only on a plan.
Which pet cameras save video without a subscription?
Tapo, eufy and Wyze do, on a memory card you buy once. On Furbo, Petcube and Ring, the history is the paid part: you can still watch live and talk, but there is nothing to scroll back through. Petcube says it plainly: "without Petcube Care, you will not be able to store video and get smart alerts."
| Maker | Saves video, no plan | Pet alerts, no plan | The plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Furbo | No | Barking or meowing | $9.99 or $12.49 a month |
| Petcube | No | No | $59.88 or $143.88 a year |
| Ring | No | Motion only | No price printed |
| Tapo C220, C225 | Yes, microSD | Pets; bark, meow (Beta) | Optional, from $3.49 a month |
| eufy E220 | Yes, microSD | Pets, on the camera | Optional |
| Wyze Cam v4 | Yes, microSD | No — in Cam Plus | $2.99 a month per camera |
From each maker's own pages, read 13 October 2026; Ring from its own article on indoor cameras for pets, dated 19 June 2026. Each maker's words are quoted below the table. Live view is free on all six, and none lists two-way audio as a paid feature. Nothing here was tested.
That second column is the one to read. A camera with no history can show you the dog now. It can't show you the chewed cushion at 11, the hour of barking a neighbour mentions, or the moment the cat got onto the counter.
Ring says the same about its own cameras. Its article on watching pets, dated 19 June 2026, says Live View, Two-Way Talk and motion alerts work without a subscription, and that a plan is "only needed if you want to save, review, and share video clips of your pet's activity". It then sends you to Ring's plan pages for the price — which print none, as set out on the Ring price page. More on Ring without a plan is on the Ring page.
Which pet cameras tell you it was your pet, for free?
Three do it for free: Furbo, which alerts you to barking or meowing; Tapo's C220 and C225, which list pet, bark and meow detection; and eufy's E220, which eufy says "detects humans, pets, and crying" on the camera itself. Ring tells you something moved, not that it was your pet.
Careful in the shop: Tapo's C210 and C211 look almost exactly like the C220, and their pages list person detection — not pets. If the alert matters to you, check for "Pet Detection" on the model you buy. What Tapo's paid plan adds to an alert is a picture in the notification; the alert itself is free, as the Tapo page explains.
Wyze goes the other way: its plans page lists pet detection and barking alerts among what Cam Plus includes. Petcube's free tier has live video and no smart alerts at all.
What does a pet camera subscription cost over two years?
Anywhere from nothing to $407.76 over two years, for the plan alone. On monthly billing, Furbo Nanny Standard and Petcube Care Optimal are both $9.99 a month, $239.76 over two years. Wyze's Cam Plus is $29.99 a year and Tapo Cloud $34.99. A Tapo or eufy camera with a card costs nothing more after you buy it.

| Plan | Monthly × 24 | Cheapest billing |
|---|---|---|
| Furbo Standard | $239.76 | $155.84 (2-year) |
| Furbo Premium | $299.76 | $194.82 (2-year) |
| Petcube Optimal | $239.76 | $119.76 (yearly) |
| Petcube Premium | $407.76 | $287.76 (yearly) |
| Petcube bundle | $143.76 | — |
| Wyze Cam Plus | $71.76 | $59.98 (yearly) |
| Tapo Cloud | $83.76 | $69.98 (yearly) |
| Ring | No price printed | No price printed |
| Tapo or eufy + card | $0 | $0 |
Monthly price × 24, and the plan pages' own yearly and 2-year figures, read 13 October 2026. Furbo Standard keeps 3 days of history and Premium 7; Petcube Optimal 3 days and Premium 90; the Petcube bundle includes the camera; Wyze Cam Plus is per camera; Tapo Cloud covers up to two cameras. Furbo's first yearly bill is $83.92 (Standard) or $104.92 (Premium) and renews at $95.90 or $119.90, so two yearly bills come to $179.82 or $224.82. Each extra Furbo camera adds $2 a month, $48 over two years. The card is a one-off purchase, not counted.
Two things that are easy to miss. Furbo charges per camera — "Add $2/mo for every additional camera" — so a second room adds $48 over two years. And Furbo's yearly price is a first-year price: it renews higher, as the note under the table shows. Every camera plan, with the date its price was read, is on the subscription tracker; Tapo's three plans are explained on the Tapo cost page.
Is the free Petcube camera really free?
Only if you pay for Care. Petcube's Care Bundle reads "FREE camera + Petcube Care starting from $5.99/mo", which comes to $71.88 a year and $143.76 over two years. Bought on its own, the Petcube Cam is listed at $31.99 and needs no plan, but then it keeps no video history and sends no smart alerts.
Over two years, the bundle's $143.76 is a little less than buying the camera and paying Care Optimal yearly ($151.75 together), and a lot more than buying the camera and paying nothing. The bundle's offer terms say the plan must run for at least 12 months; cancel earlier and you pay the camera's full price, $39.99 for the Cam.
What does Furbo do without Furbo Nanny?
You can watch, talk, and hear about barking — but you can't look back. Furbo's own answer: "Without Furbo Nanny, the camera includes basic features like Live View, 2-Way Audio, Auto Pet Tracking, and standard Barking or Meowing Alerts." Video History is on the list of what Furbo Nanny unlocks.
So Furbo without a plan is a good lunchtime check-in and a bark alert. The rest of what Furbo describes — activity alerts, emergency alerts, "Calm My Pet" — is on the paid side, along with any video to look back at.
What should you buy to never pay a monthly fee?
A camera that records to a memory card, plus the card. The Tapo C220 if you have a dog and want to hear about barking; the eufy Indoor Cam E220 if you want a camera that turns to see the whole room. Neither comes with a card, and that one-off purchase is what replaces the monthly fee.
The catch on the eufy, as promised: its FAQ says the E220 "turns to follow a moving person or pet", while the comparison table on the same page lists its tracking as "Only Human" and gives pet tracking to the pricier E30 and S350. If following the cat around the room is the reason you want it, ask eufy which is right before you buy.
Both are indoor cameras on a plug. How indoor cameras compare on privacy and sound is on the indoor cameras page; whether a brand's other cameras record without a plan is on the eufy page and the roundup.
What to get so you never pay a monthly fee
Both cameras record to a memory card with no subscription, and their makers' pages name pet detection. Neither comes with a card, so the card is here too. Specifications as published by each maker, read 13 October 2026; nothing was tested.

Corrections
Pet camera plans change often — Furbo's plan page introduces "Furbo Nanny 3.0". If something here has moved since 13 October 2026, tell us and it is corrected with the new date noted. Until 20 October 2026 the cost table and chart said Tapo Cloud was for one camera; Tapo's page says it covers up to two. Until the same day it also said Petcube's bundle page gave no term; its offer terms, read 20 October 2026, give 12 months.
